A palo seco: Cantes (sings) which are done at bare voice, without being accompanied

Afilla: Harsh, rancous voice. It received this name from the famous singer El Fillo, who had this type of voice.

Agachonar, gache, gacho, gachonal,...:/An-GA-CHO-NARR/: Words that gypsies use in order to point out people who are not from their race and to the sing that does not sound gypsy-like.

Angel: /AN-GEL/:The light or grace of certain styles in opposition to the more dramatic and dark ones. It can be said as a happy or light duende.

Cambio:/CAN-B-O/: Copla which ends a series of sings of the same style, but with a changed intonation in order to break the pitch or tone.

Cante de alante / Cante de atras: /CANT-A-D-ATLANT_CANT-D-AT-R-S/:It has to do with the relative importance of the singer. If singing has the main role, with the guitarrist following, it is said adelante. Otherwise, if it is singed in a secondary role, following the dance, it is said atras.

Duende:/DOO-N-DEn/: Abstract concept that has to do with the capability of transmission (expression) of the flamenco art.

Hermetica: /HERMETICUp/:The most primitive time from the cante (sing). It was called this way because its supporters said that it was only expressed in the intimacy of the gypsy homes and that when it came out from this environment it lost its essence.

Jipio:/HE-P-O/: Acute, sharp sound, like a long "ay", in which are based the tercios from the entrance and exit of each phrase of the sing.

Jondo, jondura:/HONDO/: Emotional intensity and expressiveness with which the deeper and more flamenco-like styles are gebnerally classified.

Melisma: /MELISMU/:A very particular flamenco characteristic. It is the succession of several notes singed over the same syllable.

Palo:/PALO/ Colloquial denomination of the flamenco styles. There are about 40 palos. Examples are Alegrias, Bulerias, Solea, Tangos, Fandangos, Seguidillas, etc.

Payo: /PA-E-O/:Tough farmer. It comes form the payes (former citizen of the Mediterranean region) and now is used in East Coast of Spain. Gypsies began using this word to refer rudely to whom are not from their race. The word has been generalised to refer to the people who are not gypsies.

Pellizco: /PE-G'S-CO/:Emotional impact which is produced by the good cante (sing), or good toque (guitar play), even baile (dance), in the sensitiveness of the spectator.

Rajo:/RAHO/ Quality in voice and expressiveness intensity of the cantaor (flamenco singer), of which depends its capacity of jondura and duende.

Tercio:/TERTHIO/: Each of the verses of the strophe or copla (flamenco song). The lyrics of a flamenco song are formed by verses that in flamenco are called thirds (tercios).

Zambra:/THUMBRA/: Arab expression which means fiesta with dance and sing. Generic name given to the traditional spectacles of the Sacromonte (neighbourhood in Granada), and also to the flamenco like style in which it is play, sing and dance "por moro" ( in the way of the morocco men). Rhythmically they are similar to the tangos (tango is a palo flamenco).
